Abstract Description: Reading and accurately interpreting federal and state regulations is a key skill for an environmental professional. The purpose of this presentation is to show how a regulation should be read in order to understand how it impacts a process, unit, piece of equipment, etc. The typical parts of a regulation will be discussed as well as the necessary steps for reviewing the regulation to fully understand how it should be implemented. The presentation will focus on one specific regulation (40 CFR 63 Subpart CCCCC) as a sample with a given set of assumptions about the facility. Attendees can follow along with the regulation. The presentation will focus on definitions, applicability, requirements, recordkeeping, and reporting. It is easy to start in the middle and completely miss the point of a regulation if any one of the steps is missed. This skill is usually not taught in school but is vital to the success of environmental professionals as an incorrect interpretation can result in non-compliance and potential violations and fines. This presentation is designed for young professionals or those new to the field. The presenter has many years of experience in both industry and consulting and has worked with young professionals on this topic.
