Abstract Description: As the Biden Administration has brought new life into Environmental Justice efforts across the United States, we are starting to see glimpses of how Environmental Justice will impact the permitting process. This presentation will provide examples of where we are seeing Environmental Justice implemented in the permitting process. This presentation will include a brief overview of Environmental Justice and US EPA's "Interim Environmental Justice and Civil Rights in Permitting Frequently Asked Questions" document released in August 2022 to provide a basis for where we are with Environmental Justice, however the majority of the presentation will look at how the permitting process is incorporating Environmental Justice, from additional requirements in permit applications to actual Environmental Justice discussions and information in the issued permitting documents. Attendees will see how Environmental Justice tools like EJScreen are used in permitting efforts. Environmental Justice varies from state to state, but this presentation will provide a broad overview of many states where Environmental Justice has been seen in the past few years. Presenters will share their thoughts about what else might be expected as far as Environmental Justice in permitting, based on trends and discussions and legal actions. Anyone wanting a better understanding of what Environmental Justice could mean to permitted entities would benefit from this presentation.
