Chair
Jacobs, NC
Chris Lutes of Jacobs is a nationally recognized expert in the study of the intrusion of contaminated vapors into buildings. He holds an MS in environmental science and engineer and a BS in chemistry. He has worked on commercial and military vapor intrusion projects in more than 20 states and four continents. Mr. Lutes served as a voting member of the ANSI/AARST committee that released a vapor intrusion mitigation standard for 1-4 family residential buildings and is updating the soil gas mitigation standards for all buildings. He has recently completed a study of the vapor intrusion characteristics of a database of 79 military commercial/industrial buildings. That study is facilitating the acceptance of more appropriate screening levels and attenuation factors for commercial buildings. He has authored ten peer reviewed vapor intrusion papers.
He was an author for three EPA engineering issues on Vapor Intrusion: Mitigation, the application of passive samplers for vapor intrusion and the uses of excavation at VI sites. He has worked with EPA to conduct and publish several research studies on aspects of vapor intrusion including uses of radon as a tracer, temporal variability, soil vapor extraction and passive sampling methods. His work is helping to pioneer new mechanistic understandings that allow highly variable vapor intrusion processes to be better predicted allowing for more efficient sampling strategies. His knowledge of building systems is not just scientific – he also has extensive hands on experience in building renovation and property management.
