Abstract Description: Historically it was environmentally friendly enough for a landfill to have a gas collection and control system to collect landfill gas and combust it in an open flare, but times have changed. Everyone is focusing on the environmental and sustainability impacts of what is done with collected landfill gas. With new regulations and more complex permitting issues as sites, landfills have more things to consider when thinking about how to manage collected landfill gas. With the help of emerging new technologies, there are now more environmentally friendly and sustainable ways to manage collected landfill gas. This presentation will explore the various technologies currently in use for collected landfill gas, what has historically been done and what trends are emerging for the future. It will provide an overview of the technology itself and will look at the sustainability impact for each one. This presentation will explore several scenarios help identify the specific site conditions which might make one technology more suitable than another for a particular scenario. This presentation will help the attendee better understand how the various technologies used can have a positive impact on the overall sustainability of the landfill. Attendees will leave with an understanding of what options are available for handling collected landfill gas and how these technologies might impact the landfill's sustainability footprint.
